Some cars arrive already looking stunning. This one left extraordinary. A China Grey Aston Martin Vantage came into our Winchester studio for a full transformation, and what drove away was something else entirely.

From Grey to Cobalt

The brief was bold: cover the China Grey paintwork and replace it with Cobalt Blue using a full colour change PPF installation. Not a respray, not a traditional vinyl wrap, but a premium Paint Protection Film in colour. A product that is relatively new to the UK market but growing rapidly in popularity, and for good reason.
The finish is unlike anything vinyl can offer. Where vinyl can carry an orange-peel texture that gives away its nature under close inspection, this film reads as paint. At Steelford Supercar Show, where the finished car made its public debut, the reaction was consistent; most people were genuinely surprised to learn it was a film at all. That is perhaps the best endorsement a product like this can receive.

More Than Just the Bodywork

The colour change extended beyond the panels. The wheels, originally factory grey, were powder-coated white, a decision that lifts the whole car and sharpens the contrast with the Cobalt Blue bodywork considerably. The existing yellow vinyl accents were removed and replaced with white AMR-style pieces, referencing the Aston Martin Racing aesthetic, featuring end-plate lettering and detailing that suit the Vantage’s character far better than the original yellow ever did.
The cumulative effect of these changes (body, wheels, accents) is a car that feels entirely re-authored. Same bones, but completely different personality.

An Honest Note on the Film

We take pride in working to an exceptionally high standard, and that means being transparent when a product presents genuine limitations. Colour change PPF currently comes in a maximum width of 60 inches. The Vantage bonnet measures 72 inches, wider than the film can cover in a single run.
On most panels, we work without visible joins. On this bonnet, that simply was not possible. It is a limitation of where this product currently sits in its development in the UK market, not of the installation. As the product matures and wider formats become available, it is one that will disappear. For now, it is worth knowing about before committing to a colour change on a car with particularly wide panel surfaces.

The Reaction

The Vantage drew consistent attention at Steelford. Questions at the stand centred on two things: the depth of the colour, and the texture, or rather, the absence of it. Guests accustomed to seeing vinyl wraps up close were caught off guard by how closely the finish mirrored paint. Several enquired about their own cars before the day was out.

It is a reaction we expect to see more of as colour PPF becomes better known. The product offers the same protective benefits as clear PPF, self-healing film, UV resistance, defence against stone chips and surface abrasion, while simultaneously transforming the car’s appearance. The Vantage is a strong example of what that combination can look like in practice.
