For a long time, if you wanted to change the colour of your car, the options were limited: a full respray or a vinyl wrap. Each came with trade-offs. A respray is permanent, expensive, and affects resale value. Vinyl wrap offers flexibility but provides little in the way of protection. It can lift, bubble, and degrade, doing nothing to shield the paint beneath it.
PPF colour change is something altogether different. It combines the transformative visual impact of a full colour change with the protective qualities of premium Paint Protection Film. A self-healing, optically bonded film that guards against stone chips, road debris, UV degradation, and surface abrasion. The result is a car that looks exactly how you want it to look, while being better protected than it was before.
This month, one such transformation left our Winchester studio looking unrecognisable from the vehicle that arrived.

Tesla Model X: From Glacier Blue to Black Metallic Bronze
Few cars divide opinion quite like the Tesla Model X. Love it or loathe it, it is an unmistakable presence. A large, angular SUV with falcon-wing doors and a kerb appeal that draws attention wherever it goes. Our customer’s example arrived in Glacier Blue, Tesla’s clean, pale factory finish. A smart choice from the factory. But not, as it turned out, the right colour for where this car was headed.
The brief: Black Metallic Bronze.
It is a bold combination, sitting somewhere between stealth and statement. The black base absorbs light in a way that makes the car feel more aggressive, more purposeful. The bronze metallic flake adds depth and movement, catching the sun at angles that the original Glacier Blue never could. On the Model X’s broad, sculpted surfaces, the effect is commanding.
The full exterior was wrapped panel by panel with the precision required to ensure clean lines at every edge and shut line. The result is a finish that reads just like paint, while protecting the original beneath it.
For Tesla owners in particular, PPF colour change makes considerable practical sense. Tesla’s factory paint has a well-documented reputation for softness and susceptibility to damage, and Glacier Blue, as a lighter colour, is notoriously unforgiving when it comes to showing stone chips and surface marks. The new Black Metallic Bronze not only transforms the car’s personality, it actively addresses one of the Model X’s most persistent ownership frustrations.
The Case for PPF Colour Change
This project illustrates the core proposition of PPF colour change better than any
specification sheet could. This is not a budget modification or a quick cosmetic fix, it is a considered, high-quality transformation on a car its owner has invested significantly in, and
wants to keep that way.
The advantages over traditional vinyl wrap are meaningful:
- Protection is built in. Standard vinyl changes the colour but does nothing to defend the paintwork beneath. PPF does both simultaneously. Every panel shielded against chips, abrasion, and environmental damage from the moment the film goes on.
- The finish is superior. High-quality PPF colour change film has a depth and clarity that vinyl often struggles to match, particularly on complex curves and large panel surfaces. Where vinyl can carry an orange-peel texture, a gloss PPF finish reads as paint.
- Reversibility is preserved. The original factory finish remains untouched. Whether you change your mind in two years or the car moves to a new owner, the option to return to the original colour is always there — with the paint in exactly the same condition as the day it was protected.
- Self-healing technology. Premium PPF films recover from light surface scratches with the application of heat, maintaining a flawless finish over the life of the film in a way that vinyl simply cannot.
